Pondicherry Pudumai Handicrafts Artisans Co-operative Society was registered during 1997 with 57 master crafts men and their families in and around Puducherry region are the members of the society. At present this society consists of 229 craftsmen as member on 01.01.2008. The General Manager DIC, Deputy Director Ind & Com, Project Manager DIC are effectively monitoring the activities of society as Directors of the board

Presently an elected Board of Directors (including government officials) with the President ship of Thiru V.K.Munusamy, State Awarder and National Merit Holder is being administrating the society. The main objective of the society is to develop the local handicrafts and to uplift the lively hood of poor artisans in and around Puducherry region, besides improving their quality to cope with the export market. The society organizes sales emporium in beach road, Puducherry in the name of ‘PUDUMAI’ to promote the sale of Puducherry crafts

Apart from this, the society conducts exhibitions, craft bazaars in Puducherry and other states of India with the financial assistance of District Industries Centre and Development commissioner (Handicrafts), Government of India. The sales amount is paid to the members of the society every month.

The society also provides welfare activities by providing financial assistance for the craftsman for their loss of property due to natural calamities and other any disaster. Free medical insurance is provided to the members of the society and their family. It also provides scholarship to the (Student) son/daughter of the artisans.

The society has got “Best Society Award” in 1998-99, 2003-07 and 2005-06 from Government of Puducherry. Nearly ten thousand artisans were being benefited by the society of PUDUMAI in Puducherry.
